On behalf of the Hong Kong Civil Service Cricket

Club, of which I am the President, I have the honour to

submit a request that His Excellency the Governor may be

pleased to consider a grant from the Colonial Treasury to the Club of a sum not exceeding $10,000 in order that the

Club may be able to proceed to the erection of a new Club

House in the Happy Valley.

The circumstances of this application are as follows.

The Hong Kong Civil Service Cricket Club was founded in

1908, under the Presidency of the Director of Public Works,

the Honourable Mr. W. Chatham, C.M.G. The existing Club

House was then built, at a cost of $3,000. I am informed that the construction of the same building at the present time would involve an expenditure of $10,000. The cost

of the original Club House was met by the members of the

Club, who took up an issue of debentures for the amount. One hundred and twenty debentures were issued at $25.00

each. The last of the debentures was paid off in 1918.

Since that time the Committee of the Club has consistently

followed an economical policy with the object of obtaining

a "building fund" to be available at a suitable time for

improvement and extension of the Club premises. As the

result of the continuation of this policy for the last

eleven years, the Club has now accumulated a building fund of approximately $10,000. The officers of the Club

have recently been informed officially that the new alignment of the public road (which appears in red in the

site-plan here enclosed) will render necessary in the near future the demolition of the present Club House.
